Wearing a brace

my braceClothes advice - I had a front and back to my brace which fastened at the sides, (it was solid plastic in a choice of colours!) some are just hard backs fastened at the front with soft straps. If you have to wear a brace at anytime before or after your operation here is some advice on what to wear. You will probably jump one or two sizes but your clothes can still be fairly fitted. Underneath the brace wear a soft cotton vest top, to stop it rubbing and keep you comfortable, as you get very hot in summer. High necked t-shirts are good especially if they have a collar, and track suit tops with a hood are very good at hiding the high bit of brace at the back of your shoulders. Trousers are a bit of a problem as the brace usually comes down to your hips, elasticated waists are the best, but you can find some fitted trousers that look OK. Anything else is fine as long as it is not too clingy. - Nicole

In the weeks following the op.
  • I had a bed downstairs for a few weeks so I could lie down and watch the TV when I was tired.
  • I put Aloe Vera gel and vitamin E oil on my scar to help it heal.
  • I hired a perching stool from the British Red Cross to help me sit down in the shower. - Nicole
Once your brace comes off - It's really important to start gently exercising once the brace has done its job, as all your stomach and back muscles are now very weak. Swimming is excellent. Physiotherapy is also a good idea. Strong muscles prevent back strain which can lead to pain.
