These are some of our most popular questions, we hope our answers might also help you. Want to know something else? Just email us and we will try our best to answer it. Want to add a comment? We are interested in your point of view. Q How long does it take to recover after a spinal fusion op? A This varies from person to person, but usually it's a minimum of about 6 weeks before you can think about going back to school/work as you get tired very easily. Q How long will I be in hospital for? A This depends on whether you are having 1 or 2 operations (stages). For 1 stage it's about 12 to 14 days and a bit longer for 2 stages. Once you have your brace fitted and can sleep in it comfortably for two nights without it hurting or rubbing you, walk around OK and climb stairs, you can go home. Q What physical restrictions will their be post op? A While you are wearing your brace you won't be able to lift or carry heavy things, twist, lie on your stomach, raise your hips more than 90 degrees, sit on the floor or low chairs or have a bath (but a shower is OK). Once the brace comes off, it takes another year before your back is completely healed, so you shouldn't play contact sports, go horse riding, go on roller coasters, or do heavy lifting. After this time it's up to you to decide what you can do within your own limits. |
